Our Journey

Our Journey

I’ve always found inspiration in the developing world where the pace is slow and the people have so little. Usually it’s the strength and resilience in the women that I admire the most. However on a recent trip to Central America I have been changed forever by a group of children – many of them teenagers!! In fact the most respectful, thoughtful , smart, gentle and happy teens I’ve ever come across. Not a lick of attitude amongst them! “Who are their parents?” you ask. No parents, just an amazing organization and a lot of love and structure. As many of you know each summer [...]

Why I created HipMum

Why I created HipMum

I believe women in general are extraordinary, but mothers (not to blow my own trumpet) never cease to amaze me. As the proud mother of four incredible little people (ages 11,9,6, and 4) I understand the meaning of selflessness. Like most families, there is never a dull moment in our house. I’m constantly wishing I had more time to spend with each child and more time to myself. And I wish my bathroom felt less like a highway! Regardless of whether we’ve chosen to work from home, climb the corporate ladder, start a business or stay home with the kids – mothers are the busiest [...]

Nicaragua has been an amazing teacher and has given us clarity on what’s really important in life. We thrive as a family living here where simplicity, nature, time together and helping others have become our priority. Thank you Nicaragua.

My 5 year old son is addicted to snuggling with me. How lucky am I? Each morning he’s the first to rise and enter my room to see if I’m awake. I never am but when someone is standing a few inches from your face staring at you it’s hard not to wake up. When I open an eye he whispers, “Can we snuggle?” Now anyone who knows me knows I am not a morning person. If my husband nudged me early morning in the hope of a dawn quickie, it would not be pretty. But how can you resist snuggles? I love it and I am thankful for Matty’s snuggles.

Sunsets over the ocean

I just cannot get enough of them!! They are mesmerizing, majestic and inspiring.

All the worries from the day get put into perspective as I am reminded how beautiful the world really is. I am not a religious person but in that moment I feel God in my heart and am filled with gratitude and peace.

Affordable massages

I am so thankful for affordable massages in Nicaragua . I love that I can drop my car off to be cleaned inside and out and then spend an hour being pampered for  grand total of $24. No guilt!

I am grateful for strong friendships here and the love that holds them together. Being an expat in a third world country brings you together with people whom you’d never ordinarily become friends with. I love that!!!

My husband

Not only is he smoking’ hot but I really have the most supportive husband in the world. After 16 years of being together his love for our family and me has been rock solid. He’s family man and an awesome Dad and is always open to discussing my next crazy idea. Who else would agree to spending 6 months of every year in Nicaragua? Thankful for him.

    Dear HipMum,

I was “googling” trying to find an orphanage we could visit on our trip to Nicaragua for Christmas with our grown children and 1 year old grandchild to bring some Christmas gifts to celebrate with some less privileged children this year.
I ran across your site and I think it is AMAZING what you’re doing over there! I love being a Mom and now a Grandma.

Can you make any suggestions of how we might go about sharing? We will be in Riva, on our way to Rancho Santana for 2 weeks. We have never done anything like this at Christmas (nor have we ever been to Nicaragua) so we’re pretty much clueless and you sound like you’ve really got it down pat! God Bless you and your family. We arrive on Dec. 15 and will be around until 12/26.

Thanks for any input. Would love to help the kids.
